Registered Dietitians work across a broad scope of practice. At Coova, our dietitian services are delivered by Registered Dietitians (RDs) who provide evidence-based nutrition assessment, therapeutic diet planning, and clinical nutrition support, working alongside and integrated into the care team leading your plan. Your case manager remains your primary point of contact, holding the bigger picture and ensuring all dietitian support, whether nutritional assessment, medical nutrition therapy, or food relationship counselling, is integrated into one coordinated plan built around you.
Individualized Support, Where You Live
Our dietitian services provide clinically informed, nutrition-focused support delivered wherever you are, in your home, community, or virtually. Registered Dietitians are the only regulated nutrition professionals in BC, trained to assess the relationship between food, health, and illness, and to design nutrition support that is safe, evidence-based, and meaningful in the context of a person’s real life.
This flexibility is intentional. Eating happens at home, not in a clinic, and neither does our care. Every dietitian service is delivered with a commitment to ethical practice, cultural humility, and client dignity, and integrated into the broader care plan your case manager is leading.
The goal is not only to address nutritional deficits or health risks, but to rebuild a sustainable relationship with food, support physical and mental health, and create a clearer path forward through coordinated, community-based nutrition care.
Your dietitian conducts a thorough assessment of your current nutritional status, eating patterns, health history, and goals. This goes beyond calorie counting, it looks at the full picture of how nutrition is affecting your physical health, energy, mood, and daily functioning, and forms the clinical foundation for everything that follows.
The connection between nutrition and mental health is well-established and often underaddressed in standard care. Our RDs work within Coova’s mental health-focused model to support clients whose mood, cognition, energy, or psychiatric symptoms are affected by nutritional factors, coordinating directly with the clinical team on how nutrition fits into the broader mental health picture. This is where Coova’s integrated model makes the most difference: nutrition is not an add-on to mental health care. It is part of it.
For individuals managing chronic or complex health conditions, our RDs design and deliver targeted medical nutrition therapy, structured nutritional intervention that works alongside your medical treatment. This includes nutrition support for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal conditions, eating disorders, kidney disease, and other conditions where diet plays a direct clinical role.
Our dietitians are trained to work with individuals navigating disordered eating, eating disorders, and difficult relationships with food. This work is weight-neutral, non-prescriptive, and grounded in a Health at Every Size framework, focused on restoring a safe, sustainable relationship with eating rather than on weight outcomes.
We work directly with individuals and families to build practical nutritional knowledge, understanding food labels, planning balanced meals on a realistic budget, navigating cultural food traditions within health goals, and developing sustainable habits that fit actual daily life. This isn’t generic advice. It’s grounded in your specific situation.
Your dietitian doesn’t work in a silo. At Coova, real-time communication and transparency across your clinical team, including social work, psychiatry and psychology, occupational therapy, nursing, behavioural consulting, speech and language, recreational therapy, and spiritual and cultural support, means insights are shared, plans stay aligned, and clinical goals are met through a team that’s consistently working from the same page.

In BC, Registered Dietitian is a protected title, only professionals regulated by the College of Dietitians of BC can use it. Nutritionist is not a protected title and carries no regulatory requirement. RDs complete a university degree in nutrition and dietetics, a supervised practice internship, and a national registration exam. When your health is involved, the distinction matters.
No referral is required. You can contact us directly to begin. We welcome self-referrals, as well as referrals from physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, and community organizations.
Dietitian services are not covered by MSP, but there may be more funding options available than you’d expect, including extended health benefits and private insurance plans, many of which include registered dietitian coverage. Navigating coverage can be confusing, and we’re here to help you get clarity on what applies to your situation.
Support is offered community-based and can take place in your home, community spaces, or virtually depending on your needs and the nature of the service.
Our dietitian services are designed to complement, not replace, existing care. Your RD communicates directly with your physician, psychiatrist, and the rest of your Coova clinical team to ensure nutrition support is cohesive and aligned with your broader care plan.
Both. Support can be structured around an individual or extended to include family members, particularly where a loved one’s eating or nutritional health is a shared concern. During your initial consultation, we will help determine the configuration of support that best fits your situation.
A consultation is the best place to start. We take the time to understand your situation and whether this service is well-suited to your needs. If another form of nutrition or health support would serve you better, we will be transparent and help you find the right direction.
